Rankings Highlight Computing’s Role as ‘Driving Force Behind Modern Advancements’

As computing revolutionizes research in science and engineering disciplines and drives industry innovation, Georgia Tech leads the way, ranking as a top-tier destination for undergraduate computer science (CS) education.

U.S. News and World Report released its 2025 U.S. News Best Colleges rankings this week. The new rankings place Georgia Tech as No. 2 for cybersecurity, software engineering, and mobile/web application studies and No. 5 for artificial intelligence (AI).

"Our continued excellence across all specialties of computing reflects Georgia Tech's commitment to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge needed to lead and innovate in today's interconnected world," said Vivek Sarkar, John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of the College of Computing at Georgia Tech.

"Our 'computing plus X' vision highlights that computer science is no longer a standalone discipline—from science and engineering disciplines to industry verticals, computing is the driving force behind modern advancements."

Georgia Tech increased its standing or held steady in all CS-related specialties this year. Notable increases include:

  • Georgia Tech climbed to No. 4 in computer systems in the latest rankings, up from No. 6 in 2024.
  • Data analytics/science undergraduate education saw a notable rise, tying for No. 4 and up two places from last year.
  • Mobile/web applications studies leaped from No. 7 to No. 2 in the 2025 rankings.
  • Programming languages climbed four spots to a tie for No. 10.
  • Software engineering education rose one spot to No. 2.
  • CS Theory also climbed one spot, placing No. 10.

Overall, the latest rankings place Georgia Tech at No. 7 for undergraduate CS programs.

Sarkar said there are several reasons why these rankings are important for the College of Computing, Georgia Tech, and the state of Georgia. Along with attracting top-tier faculty and students, strong CS rankings reflect positively on the entire institute.

"These rankings help distinguish Georgia Tech as a leading institution in core areas of computing like AI, cybersecurity, and data analytics, as well as in interdisciplinary partnerships with our colleges of Business, Design, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Lifetime Learning, and Sciences," Sarkar said.

"Overall, these achievements strengthen our commitment to innovation and our ability to provide students with the skills and experiences needed to succeed in high-demand and fast-moving areas in their future careers."
