Sonification Lab Facilitates Eclipse Experience for Visually Impaired
Interactive computing researchers are helping people with visual impairments experience today's eclipse.
Professor Bruce Walker, Ph.D. student Brandon Briggs, and others from Walker's Sonification Lab combine detailed descriptions, virtual and augmented reality technologies, and auditory representations to create a bespoke soundtrack experience for users, regardless of visual ability.
"We want to give a complete experience of totality during the eclipse, with the immersive sound of what birds and other animal behaviors would be at that time," says Walker, jointly appointed in the School of Interactive Computing and the School of Psychology.
